English is not a miracle coming from nowhere but instead, it has gone through very long history described as follows:
Long long ago, England was a land where the native Britons lived, there were also the Romans.
In 450 AD, Germanic tribes called the Anglo, Saxon and, the Jutes came to England. Even if the Romans had left, Latin still contributed the simple terms like house, woman, seven days in week,
In 597, Christian missionaries came and introduce Christianity together with the more funky Latin words like martyr, bishop, fond
Then came the Viking came bringing words like drag, ransack, thrust, and die, give and take. They contributed about 2000 words
In 1066, there were Norman conquest when William the Conqueror invaded England and made French as the most prestigious language. French contributed words like judge, jury, evidence, justice, all that had something to do with law and government. Latin became the language of religion while English became the language of layman. This low level language contributed words like cow, sheep, and swine from English farmers. These animals eventually changed (cooked) and became beef or pork. The words that have something to do with food is those from French
The native English finally fought against the Norman, won the hundred years of war that English finally became dominant language again
2000 words were invented by Shakespeare, some of them are dauntless, besmirch, and exile. Shakespeare thought that English should be a vivid vibrant and rich language, very expressive and emotional
King James Bible was written and spread, and it made more and more people literate. it let the language itself expanding.
English was used predominantly in science by Robert Hook, Robert Boyle, and Newton. The Royal Society was formed by invisible colleges. First they talked Latin, but finally realized that they all spoke English. It gave them idea to use English instead, for science. New words like acid, gravity, electricity, and pendulum
Britain decided to take English on tour around the world by creating its Empire
English develop all over the globe
